SC recommends Justice Martires for ombudsman
The Supreme Court on Tuesday unanimously recommended high court Associate Justice Samuel R. Martires for appointment as next Ombudsman to replace Conchita Carpio-Morales who will retire on July 26.
Martires obtained 11 votes of the 12 Justices who were present (Martires, no part).
Only three nominees for the Ombudsman post received votes, namely: Martires, 11 votes; Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice (ret.) and Incumbent Special Prosecutor Edilberto G. Sandoval, 4 Votes; and Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, 3 votes
Martires was previously an associate justice of the Sandiganbayan before being appointed to the SC.
But his application to the ombudsman was opposed by a group of priests, pastors and theological teachers.
They claimed that Martires once linked ousted chief justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno’s faith to “mental illness”.
