Mandaue court clears 2 Oyao brothers in cop’s 2008 slay
A Cebu trial court has acquitted two of the Oyao brothers—accused of running a drug syndicate in Lapu-Lapu City—in the 2008 shooting of a policeman.
In a recent decision, Mandaue City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 28 Judge Mercedita Dadole-Ygnacio granted the demurrer filed by Paquito “Quipot” Oyao and Arcadio “Kadyo” Sayson.
The judge ruled the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient to prove the two conspired with their siblings to kill Police Officer 2 (PO2) Jose Clint Cañete on October 21, 2008.
“in the absence of clear and convincing proof of its existence, the allegation of conspiracy in this case cannot be given merit,” read the decision.
Cañete, a member of the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group 7, was shot dead while riding a motorbike along the First Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.
