Makakabawi na! Corona’s abogado Tranquil Salvador eyed as prosecutor in Sereno impeachment
A member of the late Chief Justice Renato Corona’s defense team for his impeachment trial is reportedly set to return to the Senate— but this time, as a prosecutor in the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
There’s talk that Tranquil Salvador III will be among the private prosecutors for Sereno’s impeachment trial.
In case Salvador’s participation is confirmed, he will be joining a panel that includes politikos such as former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas and House justice committee chairman Reynaldo Umali.
According to Abogado’s source, there’s also a possibility that public prosecutors from the House will enlist other members of Corona’s defense team as part of their team in a private capacity.
In case the plan pushes through, it will be the abogados’ chance to exact their comeuppance at Sereno, who was appointed as Chief Justice after Corona was convicted in an impeachment trial in 2012.
Corona’s ouster was seen as a political move to enable then-President Benigno Aquino III to have his appointee, Sereno, head the Supreme Court.
The House justice committee already found probable cause to impeach Sereno but lawmakers have deferred voting on the plenary for her impeachment to May.
