4 SC justices, judge to face JBC for vacant CJ post
Four Supreme Court justices and a trial court judge are scheduled to appear before the Judicial and Bar Council tomorrow, Thursday, during a public interview for the post chief justice, which became vacant after the ouster of Ma. Lourdes Sereno via quo warranto.
Those who will face the JBC are SC Associate Justices Teresita Leonardo-de Castro, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Andres Reyes Jr., and Judge Virginia Tejano-Ang of Tagum City, Davao del Norte Regional Trial Court starting 9 a.m. at the SC Division Hearing Room.
In an advisory, the SC said Bersamin will be the first to be interviewed in the morning, followed by de Castro and Peralta while Reyes was scheduled first in the afternoon and will be followed by Tejano-Ang.
The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees to the President for vacant posts in the judiciary and the offices of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman.
Justices de Castro, Peralta, Bersamin were automatic nominees to the post for being among the five most senior SC magistrates.
They accepted their automatic nomination, while acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio declined and Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr. had just recently retired.
