Naive: Duterte says Hontiveros shouldn’t speculate on Aguirre’s texts
President Rodrigo Duterte said Senator Risa Hontiveros shouldn’t infer anything from the private text messages between Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and former Congressman Jing Paras.
“That is a very naive. You — you… Ayaw ko lang anuhin si Hontiveros. When two persons talk and you are not a party to it, do not draw conclusions of what they are talking about. For all you know, ang pinag-usapan ng mga gago, babae,” said Duterte in an interview with reporters at Fort Bonifacio Wednesday morning.
Last Monday, Hontiveros showed a zoomed photo of Aguirre’s text messages on his phone taken by a photographer in a Senate hearing. Hontiveros claimed that Aguirre urged “Cong Jing”, former Negros Oriental Rep. Jacinto “Jing” Paras, to rush the filing of cases against Hontiveros. Paras, a member of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), filed an impeachment case against Commission on Elections Chair Andy Bautista.
Duterte gave the comment even though he admitted he was not aware of the context of the Aguirre’s conversation with Paras.
Aguirre lashed out at Hontiveros for prying into his privacy.
“I condemn such an act for being unethical and for being unbecoming of a public servant. That a public servant will conveniently resort to the protective mantle of a privilege speech makes it more despicable and diabolical.
The privacy of communication and correspondence shall be inviolable except upon lawful order of the court, or when public safety or order requires otherwise, as prescribed by law,” said Aguirre.
