Pantabangan Vice-Mayor found guilty of rape
The San Jose, Nueva Ecija, Regional Trial Court (RTC) has found former Pantabangan Vice-Mayor Romeo Borja Jr. guilty of two counts of rape.
In a decision on September 18, Branch 38 Judge Leo Cecilio Bautista meted out two penalties of reclusion perpetua, or imprisonment of up to 40 years each.
Borja was also ordered to pay his maid and victim Mina (not her real name) P100,000 in civil indemnity and P100,000 in moral damages; he was also ordered to give her financial support.
Bautista ordered Borja’s immediate commitment to the New Bilibid Prisons.
Mina accused Borja of raping her repeatedly since she was 17 years old, from 2009 to 2011. She could not seek help right away because she was threatened.
In a statement, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Emmi de Jesus, whose group had kept watch over the case, said: “This is a victory not just for “Mina” but for women who for the past five years, determinedly kept watch over the cases filed against former Vice Mayor Borja.”
