Magbabakasyon pa kami! House gives Palace one week to decide on martial law extension

With Congress’ three-week Christmas break fast approaching, the House of Representatives gave Malacañang one week to decide on the extension of martial law in Mindanao.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said in a radio interview on Thursday (December 7) that President Rodrigo Duterte has to give his word on the extension of martial law before Congress goes on break from December 16 to January 14 next year.
“Dapat… kailangang mag-communicate sila sa amin within the week, para by next week puwede na naming talakayin iyan, kung aaprubahan or hindi,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez also nixed the idea of Congress holding a special session to tackle the extension of martial law.
“Alam mo naman, Pasko ito, hindi ito kagaya ng ibang break na puwedeng ipatawag natin yung mga mambabatas. Ito, Pasko, ang hirap-hirap talaga,” he said.
The House Speaker, who hails from Mindanao, supports the extension of martial law and even wants it until the end of President Duterte’s term in 2022.
“Yung threat ng terrorism, continuing iyan. Kaya hindi pupuwedeng sabihin natin na dahil natapos yung bakbakan doon sa Marawi ay tapos na ang problema natin,” Alvarez said.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines previously said they are mulling to recommend the extension of martial law in Mindanao, citing remaining foreign terrorist threats.
Politiko has learned that Duterte is more keen to extend martial law.
