Frat ties bind: Palace nominates Duterte’s Lex Talionis brod to JBC
Malacañang has nominated a “brother” of President Rodrigo Duterte from the Lex Talionis fraternity to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on October 4 sent Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno a letter informing her of the nomination of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Jose Catral Mendoza for the JBC post that will be vacated by retired Supreme Court Justice Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez.
One of the four spots in the JBC for regular members is reserved for retired SC justices.
Duterte previously appointed another fraternity brother, retired judge Toribio Ilao, to the JBC.
Should Mendoza get the JBC post, he will serve until July 9, 2021.
The JBC is tasked with screening applicants for positions in the judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman.
Duterte is expected to appoint 12 out of 15 associate justices of the Supreme Court until his term ends in 2022.
