CA Justice Remedios Salazar-Fernando tops JBC vote for presiding justice post
Court of Appeals Associate Justice Remedios Salazar-Fernando has received the most number of votes from the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) for the vacant positon of CA presiding justice.
Fernando, a former commissioner of the Commission on Elections, topped the JBC voting after she got a perfect seven votes from members of the JBC.
The post CA presiding justice became vacant when Justice Andres Reyes Jr. was appointed by President Duterte to the Supreme Court last July 12.
Also, CA Associate Justice Romeo Barza came in second with five votes while CA Associate Justice Marlene Gonzales-Sison collected four votes.
Barza is one of the founding membera of the Carpio Villaraza Cruz law office, while Sison is the wife of Manila City Councilor Cassy Sison.
The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees to the President for vacant positions in the judiciary and the Offices of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman.
The powerful council is currently being chaired by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
